Dixie Carriers, Inc. operates in Marine Transportation, is based in United States. Kirby entered the marine transportation business in 1969 by acquiring Dixie Carriers, Inc., an inland tank barge operator that traced its roots to River Terminals Corporation (formed 1948) transporting petroleum between Houston and New Orleans. The acquisition became the foundation of what is today Kirby Inland Marine, the largest inland tank barge operator in the United States.

Marked Kirby's entry into the marine transportation business and established the core inland tank barge platform.
